What is the Best Survival Food to Store and Depend on During Emergencies?

!±8± What is the Best Survival Food to Store and Depend on During Emergencies?

Disasters can happen where you have to rely on your food supplies at home. Getting together some survival food isn't as complex as it might seem. Having the best emergency survival foods, those that won't spoil but still offer good nutrition, are the ones to keep stored for those unpredictable situations.

High Quality Survival Foods

Survival food bars - You can get these in 3600 calorie per day packs. It won't be the best tasting but they will store awhile and provide massive calories. Also looking into bicyclist and backpacker's bars as those are high in calories and require no preparation.

Freeze dried survival food - There are Made Ready to Eat meals and others that are freeze dried and can be stored for long periods of time.

Peanut Butter.

Brown rice - Brown rice offers a bit more nutrition than white rice and will keep your blood sugar from spiking as much.

Beans - Beans are high in protein which is a good option when meat might not be as available.

Seasoning - You don't want your food to taste bland. Keep extra seasonings to provide extra tastes.

Canned goods.

Sprouts - Sprout seeds can be stored for 2 to 3 years and can be grown in a jar in less than a week. Keep these seeds on hand to provide fresh greens which are some of the most nutritious food ever.

Food Storage Strategies

It's best to store the food you already eat. Start rotating a stock of food that you already have so that you don't have to worry as much about long term storage and expiration dates.

Keep bottles of frozen water in the freezer. This will keep the temperature of the food down if you lose power allowing you to enjoy the foods you already have at home first before using your stored food. This also provides an additional water source once thawed.

Try to focus on basic goods over commercially packaged products. They have their place in food storage, but eventually these will expire where you can always be using the basic goods in normal day to day life.

Consider gardening as an option to make your stored food last much longer. A garden can extend the life of your stored food by quite a bit especially during the growing months.

The Great Karoo - A Place of Great Dryness - South Africa

!±8± The Great Karoo - A Place of Great Dryness - South Africa

The Great Karoo, is an area of about 400 000 square kilometers.

Less than two hundred years ago large herds of antelope roamed the grass flats. The Bushmen/Hottentots, the last Stone Age people, shared the "Place of Great Dryness". The Hottentots herding their sheep and cattle in the age-old pastoral pattern and the Bushmen following their traditional nomadic pursuits of hunting and feasting.

Stock farmers gradually replaced the wild game with sheep and the grass receded along with the changed grazing and weather patterns.

During the Anglo Boer War of 1899 the Republican Commandos and rebels from the Cape Colony, conducted operations throughout the Karoo. In the Calvinia Magisterial district contributing a significant number of fighters to the Republican cause.

Numerous blockhouses can still be seen at strategic locations in the Great Karoo with a prime example at the Geelbeks River 12 kilometres outside Laingsburg.

Currently sheep farming is the economic backbone of the Karoo with other forms of agriculture taking place in areas where irrigation is possible. Lately game farms and tourism to this fascinating area is also making an impact.

Places to visit in the Great Karoo in South Africa:

Prince Albert

Prince Albert had its origins in 1762 when a loan farm named Kweeckvalleij "the valley of cultivation and plenty" was established in a green and fertile valley at the foot of the awesome Swartberg Mountains. Today, the town is one of the prettiest in the country - a place of great serenity and charm, with beautiful architecture, fascinating flora and fauna and great Karoo hospitality. Just 2 kms from the foot of the awesome Swartberg Pass, Prince Albert is the perfect base for exploring the wonders of the Swartberg including Gamkaskloof (The Hell) and Meiringspoort. Hiking, mountain biking, birding and botanical excursions are major attractions. Aside from a superb climate, with a high sunshine index and spectacular night skies, the village itself is a small gem, with beautifully preserved Cape Dutch, Karoo and Victorian buildings. Of these, 19 are National Monuments.

Prince Albert is known for its sun-ripened fresh and dried fruit, especially figs and apricots. Karoo lamb, olives, olive oil and homemade cheeses are local delicacies. Activities for visitors include a guided historical walk through the town, a well marked "koppie trail" with almost 100 listed plants, fossil hunting and stargazing, a tractor trail to the olive farm, traditional Karoo meals and a visit to the delightful Fransie Pienaar Museum - and there is ample hotel and guesthouse accommodation to suit all preferences and pockets. Prince Albert is well situated for overnight stops from Gauteng, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. The Garden Route resorts and beaches are two hours south by road. Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves and the Karoo National Park are just an hour away by road.

The Swartberg Mountains

The Swartberg mountains are a magnificent backdrop to the village of Prince Albert. Once considered almost impenetrable, there are now three major gateways - the Swartberg Pass, Meiringspoort and Seweweekspoort - linking the Great Karoo with the Little Karoo and the coast. Meiringspoort and the Swartberg Pass are almost on Prince Albert's doorstep, and with their awesome beauty and many opportunities for recreation, should be on every visitor's itinerary.

Meiringspoort

Soaring cliff walls with spectacular rock formations line the 25 km tarred road which winds along the floor of the gorge, crossing the Groot River 25 times. Entry to the poort is via Klaarstroom, 55 kms east of Prince Albert en route to Oudtshoorn and the coast. Hardy plants cling to the precarious rock faces while birds, baboons and smaller fauna abound in the protected kloofs and crevices.
Among the most scenic spots is the waterfall tumbling into a dark pool which, legend has it, is bottomless. Meiringspoort has been flooded several times in its 140-year history - 1885, 1968 and 1996 were devastating - and so the idea for building a high road over the mountains was born. The Swartberg Pass was opened in 1888.

The Swartberg Pass

The 27-km Swartberg Pass is considered one of the finest mountain passes in the world: an untarred road that winds to the summit 1 583 meters above sea level in steep zigzags and sudden switchbacks with breathtaking views at every turn. The road is supported in places by hand-packed stone walls, a trademark of brilliant road engineer Thomas Charles Bain. Along the way there are relics of an old prison, toll hut and other interesting historical sites. Often covered with snow in winter, the mountain's unique micro-climate supports fynbos and a rich bird life in contrast with the arid zone flora and fauna outside its cool shady kloofs. The Swartberg Pass was declared a National Monument in its Centenary year, 1988.

Gamkaskloof

Gamkaskloof (also known as The Hell) is a fascinating valley near Prince Albert where a small, proud community lived in isolation for more than 100 years. Access was only on foot or horseback, and harvests of dried fruit and wild honey were carried out by pack animals. When a road was carved into the valley in 1962, a gradual exodus began, with the last farmer, Piet Swanepoel, leaving in 1991. Their modest homes and relics of fruit orchards can still be seen. Access to Gamkaskloof is 15 kms from Prince Albert near the northern summit of the Swartberg Pass. Visitors should allow almost a full day in a sturdy vehicle to travel the 57kms to the end of the valley and back.

Beaufort West

The Beaufort West Museum has an impressive collection of awards made to South Africa's pioneer heart transplant surgeon, Professor Chris Barnard. The ornate Victorian building in which it is housed was the first Town Hall of South Africa's first municipality. There are a number of other architecturally interesting buildings in the town. An Anglo-Boer War blockhouse still "guards" the railway bridge. Annual Events: The Show - February; The Beaufort West Half Marathon - March; Kanniedood Marathon - May; Beaufort West Marathon - August; Rotary Wildfees - September.

Gamkasberg Nature Reserve

Scenic beauty is a major feature of this reserve which is home to golden mimetes (a recently discovered plant species), mountain zebra, baboon and a number of antelope species. Spring, when the wild flowers are in bloom, is the best time to visit the reserve. The duration of hiking trails varies from two hours to three days.

Karoo National Park

Noted for plains game and a rich bird life, the Karoo National Park also supports black rhino and the riverine rabbit. Among a number of short walks and hiking trails, the park has the world's first fossil trail for the blind. Especially designed for the adventurous, the strenuous three-day Springbok Hiking Trail leads to the highest point of the Nuweveld Mountains.

Laingsburg

The town was almost totally destroyed by a flood in 1981 - only 100 years after it was established. Pictures of the devastation, as well as the Wolfaard Historic Collection can be seen in the library. From a geological aspect, Laingsburg lies in one of the most interesting areas of the Karoo, and the sunsets are quite spectacular. Annual event Karoo Ultra Marathon - September.

Matjiesfontein

A Victorian village established in 1884 as a health resort by a Scottish entrepreneur. After falling into decline, it was rescued and refurbished by a well-known hotelier. The entire village was declared a national monument in 1975. The old station houses the Railway Museum and the large, privately owned Marie Rawdon Museum.

Packing Essentials For a Camping Trip

!±8± Packing Essentials For a Camping Trip

Tent

If you are tent camping, the first thing you must do is settle on the type and quality of tent you will require. Many folks are very satisfied with a relatively inexpensive tent, say one for under 0. You will require a more expensive tent and one of higher quality if you will be in situations where severe weather is a significant possibility, and if that means cold weather, you will want a four-season tent. The types of tents you can consider are a-frame tents, cabin tents, dome style tents, and solo tents. Many of these are available in backpacker models, meaning they are of a suitable weight for carrying over a long distance. Another factor is material. Some traditionalists prefer canvas tents, while others prefer not to deal with the weight and extra maintenance required. One often overlooked factor is the pole material. The options here are aluminum, fiberglass, and steel. The resource box below can guide you to additional information on all of these matters that are tent related. Along with your tent, consider the following items:

Rain Fly Tarp Tent Pegs (Stakes) Guy Ropes Hammer Tent Repair Kit Sleeping Gear

Your sleeping gear needs, much like your tent needs will be dictated somewhat by the camping you will be doing. The season and climate are obviously of paramount importance. Also, the type of bag you might choose will depend on whether or not you will be packing your gear on a backpack. Look at the temperature rating and if you must compromise between a bag that it too warm or one that will not keep you warm enough, choose the warmer. You can always unzip your bag or sleep on top of the bag. Other sleeping related gear include:

Cot Air Mattress Roll-Up Pad (inflatable or Foam) Pillows Cooking Equipment

My suggestion is that this area is often where folks over pack. If you do much of your food preparation at home and then bring it in a cooler, or, use freeze-dried meals, your needs here will be minimal. Here are some items you may wish to consider:

Portable Gas Stove (consider various options like 3-burner, one-burner, and various fuel types) Stand for Gas Stove Saucepans Waterproof Matches and/or Lighters Cutlery Utensils (long fork, slotted spoon, and long-handled tongs, etc) Can Opener (perhaps most forgotten item) Plates and Bowls Grill Toast Holder Frying Pan If You Prefer to Cook Over Fire

If you will be cooking over an open fire, consider including the following items:

Firewood Old Newspaper Firestarters (never use liquids such as gas, kerosene, etc.) Grill Barbecue Cleaning Equipment Campfire Tripod Personal Hygiene and Toiletries

These items are just some of the things you might need.

Soap Shampoo Toothpaste Towel Shower Shoes Toilet Paper Portable Toilet Portable Shower Clean-Up Items

You will need these items, or at least some of them, to keep your campsite clean and to keep your cooking materials sanitary.

Bucket Paper Towels Dish Rags and Towels Scouring Pads Disposable Wipes Detergent Plastic Storage Bags Trash Bags Clothing

These items are in addition to the normal items you would wear:

Boots Rain Gear Spare Clothes in a Wet-Proof Container Light Long-Sleeved Shirt for Sun Protection Cold Weather Clothing Safety Gear

Safety is the number one most important thing when on a camping trip. These items are a bare minimum for a camping trip. Depending on where you will go, you may need additional items. For example in bear country, you could consider bear repellent (pepper spray).

Flashlights Spare Batteries Mobile Phone and Charger Maps First Aid Kit Compass Optional GPS (always have a compass backup!) Miscellaneous Items

These items are in the miscellaneous category, but might in fact be vital.

Large Water Containers Small (personal size) Water Containers Lanterns/Portable Lights These are many of the essential items you might need on a camping trip. There will be additional items you wish to have or need. Keep your list as spartan as you can without major sacrifice. This will pay major dividends in cost and cleanup upon your return.

Propane Stoves and Propane Burners - A Critique

!±8± Propane Stoves and Propane Burners - A Critique

Propane stoves and propane burners are a traditional and very reliable choice for outdoor cooking. Across the marketplace propane burners are designed with safety and functionality in mind albeit some marks are notably better than others.

Here at the Outdoor Cooking Equipment Store we undertake regular reviews of outdoor cooking equipment. In this critique we focus on the use of propane in cooking, explaining why these burners are the ideal choice when backpacking, tailgating, camping or cooking on the patio.
By way of an introductory summary:

1. Propane stoves are safer than many other options because the fuel comes from the pressurized tank as a vapor rather than a liquid; and the tanks are sealed eliminating the risk of fire, spillage and smells;

2. Propane burners are often rated by their BTU, [a traditional unit of energy]. What this is is, is a measure of the propane unit's heating value, as measured in British Thermal Units [BTU/hour]; for those more technically interested, 1 BTU = 1 055.05585 joules; for those still racking their brains and thinking back to their physics lessons,1 BTU is approximately the amount of energy needed to heat up one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit!

3. If a campsite or area of outback that you are staying at does not allow open fires its most likely that these stoves will be allowed;indeed most often propane stoves are even allowed during fire bans.

4. Emissions from propane stoves are markedly lower than those from oil-fueled stoves;

5. They are a favored heat source for brewers;

6. Propane stoves are much cleaner than wood-burning alternatives and are a great cooking source but they should never to be used indoors;

7. They are popular for backpacking because of their ease of use but they are not so efficient in colder temperatures or at high altitudes

8. Some do say however that these stoves are too heavy for backpacking because our safety regulations require the canisters to be made of relatively thick, heavy steel;

9. Propane stoves are self-priming giving them a significant advantage over liquid fuel stoves; they are convenient as there is no requirement for preheating but they do lose their heating efficiency as the cartridge empties; and

10. They are cheaper than liquid fuel stoves to buy initially but their running cost are higher because propane fuel is more expensive.

If you are thinking of purchasing a propane burner or stove you will find that:

1. they are easy to light, the flame is highly adjustable;

2. they require no pumping of the tank;

3. they are portable and strong;

4. the simplest, single stove propane burners are small and fit easily inside your pack; albeit they can be a little heavy;

5. they are cheaper than liquid fuel stoves in general;

6. being relatively simply they need very little maintenance;

In conclusion, here at the Outdoor Cooking Equipment Store we recommend the purchase of Bayou Classic propane stoves and burners. These burners are the strongest propane burners commercially made. They are designed for strength, function and safety, whilst remaining on of the most efficient outdoor propane burners sold.

They come in a range different shapes with one, two and three burner options and a range of BTU outputs, from 55,000 BTU units enabling you to cook at the simplest levels right through to high performance burners with a 210,000 BTU units that can heat up a 162 quart stockpot in only 20 minutes.

The Shelf Life of Long Term Food Storage Items

!±8± The Shelf Life of Long Term Food Storage Items

There are four main factors that determine the shelf life of your long term food storage items. If you are looking to start a food storage program for your family, or you already have one, you will want to be aware of these things in order to get the maximum shelf life possible.

The four factors are as follows. The temperature of the storage area, the moisture content of the food, the atmosphere in the storage container, and the storage container itself. Let's look at each of those factors.

1) Temperature of the Storage Area

Temperature has more to do with how long storable food will last than anything else. If you are planning on storing your food in a warm environment, it will only last a fraction of the time it would last in a cool, dry place. Some feel that the optimum temperature is 40 degrees F or less. However, not everyone will be able to achieve that. Another factor is that you have a place where the temperature is relatively constant. Frequent temperature changes can also shorten the life of storable food.

Remember to choose a cool, dry, dark place, where the temperature remains relatively constant, for storing your food.

2) Moisture Content of the Food

Foods with excess moisture can spoil in their containers. Food chosen for long term storage should have a moisture content of 10% or less. This is hard to achieve because most people don't have access to specialized equipment.

An alternative is to get freeze-dried food, which has been specially-prepared for this purpose. The moisture content of these foods has been taken care of in the preparation process.

3) Atmosphere in the Storage Container

Oxygen oxidizes many of the compounds in food, so foods packed in air in storage containers will not store as well as Nitrogen, which is a popular gas for storing food, and one that works very well.

Some people use oxygen absorber packets. You simply place one in the storage container and seal. When you use these, you must have a storage container that is able to withstand some vacuum pressure. This is because the absorber packet will create a slight vacuum as it absorbs the oxygen.

Most food units that are packaged and sold for long term food storage have been packed with nitrogen in the #10 cans.

4) The Storage Container

Storage containers should have a hermetic seal (air tight) in order to get the longest life out of your stored foods. #10 Cans and sealable food-grade storage buckets work very well for this.

You must make certain that the storage containers you use are food grade containers. #10 cans that are used for food storage often have an enamel lining for this purpose. You can also buy plastic food-grade 5 gallon buckets.

If you buy a commercially-prepared food unit with #10 cans, then the second, third, and fourth factors are already addressed for you. In order to satisfy the first factor, you will still want to store the food in a cool, dry, dark place.

If you decide to buy plastic buckets, add the food, and seal them yourself, you will need to rent a nitrogen cylinder to fill the airspace in the buckets. When you do this, the oxygen will be displaced leaving only the nitrogen. Again, make sure that you purchase food-grade quality buckets. This is very important.

Remember these things when purchasing or creating a supply of long term storable food for your family.

Easy Camping Food

!±8± Easy Camping Food

If you think often people think of camping, "which is a simple camping food, can take away with me 'It' can somwhat depends on the type of camping that differ, but generally, if you do anything else, as are camping, RV, then dried foods are the best and easiest to make.

Of course, if you are camping in your RV you need to be more or less set the comforts of home and not really require too much effort in the food plan. Do you have a refrigerator and stovedo not really need to consider what can the food easier to prepare.

On the other hand, if you are camping in a tent, and try to get the food then dried foods are the best choice. I usually bring a few boxes of Lipton Sidekicks or rice dishes. The beauty of food, as this indicates that it is not necessary that you are carrying around a giant cooler, so that all cold and fresh. Secondly, there tends to smell really strong as a stored foodCooler. This, to me it means that animals will be less attracted to it and therefore less likely to be a nuisance during the night.

No matter what kind of food they bring, however, you should not keep them in your tent. You do not want to wake up in the middle of the night to find you are directly in the path of some foods of animal origin.

My favorite way of planning for a couple of good meals while I drain the field is that of my food. I do everything from pounds of spaghetti, sauce, meat richand barley stew. Dehydration has cost less than fifty dollars and I have to add the envy of my friends many times on the track, as I just water and heat it on my chili. Speaking of food, camping easy! It tastes like it was when I was there two months ago!

Another advantage of dry food, of course, is that it is also easier because all the water content has been removed. This makes it much easier to foods and the lock can not bear to keep it fresh,it is really more than an advantage, if the food properly, especially if you plan trips and backpacking.

No matter what kind of food you take camping, however, be sure to pack your trash. We do not want to ruin our forests and rivers with cans and food packages.
